This first volume of the Handbook offers a unique presentation of the history of Southeastern Europe, documenting conditions from the time of the earliest written sources through the Middle Ages. The book informs about the history of events and structure of dominance and power, with particular emphasis on a sequence of imperial and regional dominance so characterized by breaks and continuities. Der vorliegende erste Band des Handbuchs mit Beiträgen führender Fachvertreter bietet einen in dieser Form bislang einzigartigen Zugang zur Geschichte Südosteuropas, und dies im Wesentlichen aus vier Gründen: 1.) Die Darstellung setzt nicht mit erst dem frühen Mittelalter ein, sondern beschreibt auch die Antike, vom Einsetzen der Schriftquellen und unter Einbeziehung archäologischer, epigraphischer und numismatischer Befunde; 2.) Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Darstellung der Entstehung, Implementierung, Interaktion und des Wandels der Herrschaftsformationen, welche den Raum geprägt haben, in Form eines verbindenden Narrativs, unter Betonung der Kontinuitäten und Brüche; 3.) Im Falle imperialer Formationen (in diesem Band Rom und Byzanz) werden die Rolle und Bedeutung des Raumes innerhalb der Gesamtformation gewürdigt, um die Verschränkung von Regional- und Imperiengeschichte aufzuzeigen; 4.) Quellenlage, Forschungsgeschichte und -literatur sowie aktueller Forschungsstand und -debatten werden ausführlich dargestellt. Damit ist eine neue Basis für die künftige Forschung zur Geschichte Südosteuropas im Kontext maritimer und eurasischer Bezüge geschaffen und für ihren Einbezug in gesmteuropäischer und Globalgeschichtsschreibung.

En 1420, l'île de Korčula (aujourd’hui en Croatie) passe sous la domination de Venise. Ses archives, d’une richesse exceptionnelle, permettent de dresser le tableau d’une société vivant en bordure de l’empire maritime vénitien au xve siècle : comment ce microcosme de paysans et de bergers, de pêcheurs et de marins commerçants, de patriciens et de populares a-t-il été transformé par son insertion dans l’espace contrôlé par la grande puissance méditerranéenne ? Oliver Jens Schmitt enrichit l’approche historique classique par les détails d’une micro-histoire dans laquelle dimensions sociales, économiques et politiques se juxtaposent et se mélangent. On voit comment le doge de Venise intervient dans l’histoire tumultueuse des amours de Dragačić et de Franuša. Et, grâce aux procès-verbaux des gardes champêtres et aux registres du port, on comprend la vie quotidienne de l’île, avec ses histoires d’incendies, de contrebande et de moutons volés, à la frontière des mondes méditerranéen et adriatique. Entre la toute-puissante Venise et ce petit monde de paysans et de marins, c’est un jeu permanent de négociation du pouvoir qui règle la vie de l’île et de ses habitants.

Since the Mediterranean connects cultures, Mediterranean studies have by definition an intercultural focus. Throughout the modern era, the Ottoman Empire has had a lasting impact on the cultures and societies of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. However, the modern Balkans are usually studied within the context of European history, the southern Mediterranean within the context of Islam. Although it makes sense to connect both regions, this is a vast field and requires a command of different languages not necessarily related to each other. Investigating both Greek and Arabic sources, this book will shed some light on the significance of ideas in the political transitions of their time and how the proponents of these transitions often became so overwhelmed by the events that they helped trigger adjustments to their own ideas. Also, the discourses in Greek and Arabic reflect the provinces of the Ottoman Empire and it is instructive to see their differences and commonalities which helps explain contemporary politics.
